Aurora in Moray, Scotland

Lossiemouth on Scotlands Moray Coast has seen its fair share of Aurora (northern lights) – some of the colours can be a little wonky. You can see the aurora in the sky in Scotland if it is solid with a KP of 5.5+, which it was on this occasion, but mainly, it is best to view it through the camera lens with the sensor picking up the colour far more quickly, anything above KP 4. It is straightforward to shoot with modern cameras and the Aurora warning network of APs telling you when to get outside and embrace the cold. Personally, I want to place something of interest in the foreground; otherwise, it is just a bunch of striking colours. Here, I used the harbour to add interest against our 60% cloud cover. Further east along the coast at Cullen – they had clear skies and posted some lovely shots. If you look closely there is a hint of red centrally in the image. Enjoy
