Looking back at my 396 blog posts spanning over a decade, I rediscovered an image I took in January 2013 for a Glasgow Sampler post. In April 2023, I revisited the same scene with more advanced equipment, but didn’t share it on the blog. I have also included additional images of the same location, which complement each other beautifully. The level of detail I was able to capture with the modern equipment, surpassing the original image, is truly astonishing. It’s a clear demonstration of the remarkable evolution of photography technology in just over a decade.
Yes, I look back at my first shots with a 6Mpx Nikon D70 20 years ago, and technically there’s no comparison to my modern 40 or 60 Mpx monsters. But – and here’s the thing – I don’t think the photos are better now. Just easier to edit and enlarge. Fewer exposure or resolution constraints, so it was harder work to get them right. Your 2013 image is terrific. I’d be proud if i’d taken it.
Ha, I see I misunderstood that the image here was from 2013. Sorry. Still I think it’s probably indicative that I didn’t spot that it wasn’t.
Hi Matt if you open the blog up fully and do a search from within my blog “Glasgow Sampler” it is the left of the two results – within that post – made in 2013 is the original image which was a similar composition but much darker.

Ha. Thank you! So, for sure I would have written the same response if I’d been looking at the real 2013 version. it’s a great shot, even if the technology was less advanced.
You are of course correct… progress has been fast and at times unbelievable. But going back to my first D100, at the time that was just as fantastic and unbelievable… not just a camera, but digital opening up a whole new era of creativity and mind boggling software. Love the shots – old or new. 🙂
Agreed an incredible era of development. These are all 2023 shots David the lead image is just a retake same composition from the shot 10 years ago – I should have added that for comparison
