This is the famous Jacobite Steam Train on the Fort William to Mallaig Line (also known to some as the Hogwart’s Express from the Harry Potter Movies). Although the weather wasn’t the best I was set up to include the mini Lighthouse on the right and Ben Nevis in the background – definitely a good recce shot for a better day (works quite well in mono but we shall keep that for another day) enjoy.
Such a great shot, I love boats whether at sea or ship wrecked.
Glorious location. Love the Light on the hills. I wonder whether it would be fun next time to try standing a few paces forward to exclude the steps and gate far left. Might be a cleaner compo. Might not. Just an idea.
Well in that case – this will make you smile – to get the elevation I was stood on a huge sewage drain which was about 7 ft high and had a 5ftx5ft surface – stepping forward would loose elevation and throwing the perspective. So a crop or zoom adjust for next time. I was also considering putting some step ladders on top to attempt to put me on the same level as the train creating a proximity dynamic. The train is moving petty fast so it is pre focus and adjust – I have some shots of it on the Glenfinnan viaduct which I would love to redo with my current kit – only used Jpg in 2009 only moved to RAW in 2011 how maddening is that 😃
I like this photo very much – couldn’t get a good one when we visited. One of the few days in Scotland when it rained!
I’m singing what I think is a railway song as I look at this, Scott. (it probably isn’t!)
I’m definitely there in the moment 🙂
Great shot despite the weather.
A timeless shot and very nice!
Wonderful photo! That’s a train journey I’ve always wanted to do. One day… RH
What an excellent photo, Scott! I agree with Adrian about the composition and the sky. Fabulous!
Really nice capture and exposure, well done!
We’ve been on the Jacobite 😊
Is it worth the money Mark do you get photo ops on the train ( apart from the obvious curve of the viaduct)
It is worth it, but not necessarily for the photo ops, which are limited on the train – even over the viaduct. However photo ops at Mallaig are pretty good 😊
I’m going to be taking that train in a couple of months!!! Somehow, you worked magic on the weather. Looks perfect.
Smashing composition Scott. The weather works for me in this shot. The clouds I like very much. It doesn’t really matter to me that I can’t see the summit of Ben Nevis. It’s remained elusive and mysterious to me despite many visits and climbs so there are no surprises there. I rather like the way the clouds are hanging over the mountain.
