No More – St Peters Seminary

St. Peter’s Seminary is a former Roman Catholic seminary near Cardross, Argyll and Bute, Scotland. Designed by Gillespie, Kidd & Coia, it has been described as an international architecture conservation organisation as a modern “building of world significance”. It is one of only 42 post-war buildings in Scotland listed as Category A, the highest level of protection for a building of “special architectural or historic interest”. It is so sad to see it in this dilapidated condition.

According to the architecture writer Frank Arneil Walker, “Nothing prepares one for the sight of the new grown prematurely old.” Attempts to convert and reuse it, or even protect it from further damage, have come to nothing – hampered by the unique design of the building and its remote location.

  1. A very familiar story here in England. Far too many listed buildings just abandoned until the rot sets in. Lots of schemes proposed, then either planning issues, conservation interests and of course no money means it all come to nothing.
