Illegally Parked

In my early days of photography, I was hooked on Scottish castles and lighthouses. Nowadays, it’s fishing boats that capture my attention. I spend a lot of time wandering around harbours on the Moray Coast. My absolute favourite is Fraserburgh, but since it’s too far away for regular visits, I usually head to either Macduff or Buckie.

On this occasion, I visited Macduff, where I found the King Explorer undergoing a refit. I was captivated by the scenes’ strong leading lines and verticals. Seeing these modern vessels out of the water really makes you appreciate how much remains hidden below the waterline.

    1. Oops..need a smaller thumb 🤣 the unseen size of the trawler. Cannot help but mention, that when you were chasing castles, there were many more fishing vessels in those harbours. The old saying that you could walk from one side of a harbour on boats, without not getting your feet wet, was not far from the truth. Depite that decline still great places to explore.

      1. Ironically a lot of the harbours that were dead in the water when I arrived in the Highlands in 2009 are starting to redevelop – Buckie being a case in point the Shipyards have all reopened and the fleet of Catamarans that serve the off shore windfarms has arrived. Its great to see. We will never get back the masses of boats in harbours like the herring fleet or my early day memories of Stonehaven & Arbroath fishing harbours to the gunnels with boats. But is good to see business increasing and changing to the current needs.
