Mitchell Library – Glasgow

As a school kid, I remember visiting this library (for a school project) in what would have been its heyday. The building is still grand and functions as a library over many floors. Many rooms are shut off due to lack of funds. The main reading room is not open to the public. Which is a travesty as it is beyond stunning. I am considering writing to the library to see if they will allow me to complete a documentary shoot. We shall see. The Mitchell Library is one of Europe’s largest public libraries, with more than a million items.

It is a grand and beautiful building with a distinctive green dome and a statue of William Gladstone at the entrance. The main reading room is a stunning example of Edwardian architecture, with a vaulted ceiling, stained glass windows, and wooden galleries.

Should you be in Glasgow, it is a must-visit.
